Guest Post: Elephants For Education

Last year we learned about a charity I have supported since 2012, Human and Hope Association in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This month Human and Hope made the transition to being entirely Khmer operated, and I recently had the chance to catch up with my friend, Sally, who successfully made herself redundant from her role.

This month Human and Hope have launched a new crowd funding campaign called Elephants For Education

Congratulations on finishing your role at Human and Hope! How do you feel?

I feel so proud of the achievements of my team, but if I am speaking honestly, I really do miss Human and Hope a lot. I keep comparing my departure from the organisation to how a parent must feel when their child leaves home!

Why was it important for you to make Human and Hope entirely Khmer run?

The reason I joined Human and Hope Association was to help the organisation and staff reach their full potential, then step back. Admittedly, I was naïve at the beginning and thought it would take a year. It has taken almost four years and a LOT of hard work. However, it was worth it as I truly believe that local operation of NGO’s is the way to move communities out of poverty.

The biggest reasons that we believe local organisations should be run by locals is because of empowerment and sustainability. We believe that local people are the subject matter experts, as they are the ones who know the country, culture and traditions best. By promoting team work amongst the locals, they can learn from each other and not become reliant on foreigners. Having volunteers come and go isn’t sustainable. What IS sustainable is training local staff, who can in turn, train more local staff as part of a succession plan.

Tell me about your new crowdfunding campaign, Elephants for Education?

This is something I am SUPER excited about! Our key project at Human and Hope is educating children between the ages of five and 18 so that they can break the cycle of poverty. In order to do something different to raise funds to educate our 150 students in 2017, we have launched a crowdfunding campaign titled Elephants for Education. By pledging funds, supporters can purchase their own stuffed elephants from just $25, with postage included in Australia!

These 10 different elephants are made by our graduated sewing students in Cambodia, so not only are you supporting the education of children with your purchase, you are also providing a fair wage to a Cambodian woman so she can support her family! Not only is each elephant super cute, but each one has their own name. For example, Bopha can provide a whole month’s English education to a child, and Amao Jr. can provide a month of clean drinking water to all their students!

Why is education in Cambodia so important?

Between 1975 and 1979, an estimated two million people (a quarter of the population at the time) were killed in Cambodia through starvation, torture, execution, disease and overwork under the ruling of the Khmer Rouge. Intellectuals were targeted, and as a result, Cambodia lost most of their educated population.

It has taken a long time to rebuild Cambodia, and although the education system has developed in leaps and bounds, there is still a strong lack of education and skills in our community that has led to a life of poverty for our villagers.

With poverty comes other social issues, such as lack of hygiene which results in increased illnesses, domestic violence, and child labour. We work directly with children and their families so that with our support they can understand the value of education and help to address these social issues. We want them to break the cycle of poverty so that the next generation don’t have to deal with the hardships that this generation does.

By educating our students we are empowering them to create sustainable futures for themselves.

To purchase an elephant for $25 with shipping included in Australia, visit Human and Hope’s crowdfunding campaign.

Make sure to follow them on Instagram (@humanandhope) for exclusive giveaways during the campaign!

Scrap It: PinkFresh Studio

Today I'm stopping by with two pages using the PinkFresh Studio line 'Up In The Clouds', that was added to the shop this week.

Lately I have been scrapping a lot of photos from my childhood, and the PinkFresh designs are working perfectly. Fun and bright, they blend graphic patterns with hand drawn designs for a vibrant, youthful feel.

Picture Perfect by Tracey Kinny | Dizzy Izzy Scrapbooking

My cousin and I are in our matching Cabbage Patch Kids dresses to celebrate my 6th birthday. I decided that the Dear Lizzie 'Daydreamer' stamps would work perfectly, so I used watercolour pencils to make her match, then did a bit of fussy cutting.

It's not all 80's glam for this line though, as you'll see it also lends itself to more recent photos, like these photos from my friends wedding. The touches of watercolour and gold foil journal cards and rub ons certainly add to the romantic feel.

Live & Love by Tracey Kinny | Dizzy Izzy Scrapbooking

I'm very into watercolour at the moment, but I'm even more into it when I don't have to clean up the mess and wait for it to dry!  Plus, I just LOVE their metallic washi tape, don't you?

Happy Scrapping,

Tracey xx

Scrap It: Heidi Swapp September Skies Page 2

Another September Skies page today - this one was done with leftovers (and a few additions) from my last post.

Even though the photos on this page are pretty ordinary, this was definitely a moment that I wanted to remember, with a story to record. I was lucky to meet Heidi Swapp in 2013 at the Paper Crafts Festival, where she demoed her Color Shine skills practically straight off the plane from a 14 hour flight! The ease with which she handle the Color Shine, and the amazing results, blew my mind!

I was lucky to be able to take one of Heidi's demo samples, which she kindly signed before posing for a photo. The combination of the terrible lighting/bad photographer (my otherwise lovely husband) have lead to photos that most people might choose to delete. But I'm a fan of candid shots, and if they are the only photos from the event, I say, scrap them anyway!

I used Teal Color Shine  on the white cardstock before a layered the September Skies paper. I thought it would be really neat to use the piece of resist paper that Heidi signed as one of the layers, and because all of her products coordinate, the colours matched beautifully!

I fussy cut a few elements from the patterned papers, and used foam tape to mix them in with the die cuts and acetate pieces from the September Skies Ephemera pack. After adding a sticker from one of my Buzz Words packs, and a few carefully placed drops of Georgia Peach Color Shine and Black Marble Dylusions, and the layout was complete!

Happy Scrapping

November Retreat - Getting Ready!

The boxes of new stock are starting to arrive, this can only mean one thing - Retreat Time!

In just 3 weeks time, it will be all systems GO, retreat madness. Our lucky scrappers will hopefully be all packed and prepared with photos printed and sorted, papers and embellies neatly organised. Oh, and hopefully some room for clothes and pyjamas in their cars!

Fleur and I, and our invaluable band of helpers, will likely be running around panicking about anything we may have forgotten, pricing the stock that always inevitably arrives the day before retreat.

We have some really fun challenges and games planned, including the return of the very popular Scrapbook Whispers Challenge that premièred last retreat. I can't wait to see what Ange will prepare for us this time. I especially can't wait to see what the results will be at the end of the weekend!

We've been putting together some very creative classes, some 'Quick & Easy' for those who like to churn & burn, others featuring learning new techniques for those who like to push their comfort zone.

My favourite part of Retreat is always handing our goodie bags out, or as I like to call them, Retreat Treats.  We have been busy packing and crafting some unique handmade gifts, I'm pretty sure that this Retreats 'treats' will top them all!

Here is a Retreat Sneak to get you curious!

Ooh, what could they be?

It is not too late to join us!  There is still time to book in for the whole weekend. Or if you can only make one day, we have opened up a limited number of Day Scrap places.  Come along with a friend, or come by yourself and make some new ones!

Meet & Greet with Becky Higgins

The original version of this post first appeared on Tracey's personal blog Live.Breathe.Dream.Be.

Last Tuesday I skipped work and headed off to Lidcombe Spotlight to meet a scrapping idol of mine, Becky Higgins. This is certainly not my usual Tuesday morning, but was an opportunity I couldn't pass up.

You may be familiar with Becky through her industry-revolutionising scrapping system Project Life. I'm only new to Project Life and pocket scrapping this year, but I've been a fan of Becky's for over 10 years.

When I first started scrapping, the goto source of inspiration was definitely Creating Keepsakes Magazine (which is sadly no longer published). I can remember spending hours pouring over the submitted layouts, copying the ones I liked, and wondering why I couldn't get my scrapping to look as 'finished' as the published layouts.

Remember, this is way before blogs, Instagram and Pinterest. It was way harder to find great sources of scrap inspiration than it is today. I was also the only one I knew who scrapbooked - it was before I found my lovely scrapping community.

Then I discovered Becky's sketches. Each month she would have an article in CK featuring one of her sketches, and different interpretations of the sketch.

CLICK!

It was like a light bulb seeing those sketch designs! They guided me through my first steps into page design, and pretty soon I was doing my own rough little sketches in my sketch book. As Becky said, 'that was what worked for you at the time!'

Of course, now I've come full circle and get to see my sketches come to life at the Dizzy Izzy Crafternoons & Retreats. It's always such a thrill to see how others interpret something I've created!

I took along my copies of Becky's Sketches books for her to sign. These books were like my scrapping bibles, and are now quite well used/loved. It was so exciting to sit next to Becky, and chat with her about my scrapping journey, and about Dizzy Izzy Scrapbooking.  Becky was gracious enough to answer all of our questions, and then she got stuck into signing goodies like journal cards and core kits.

The first of many days of signing for Becky on this trip
I had seen her on Creative Live, and I'm familiar with her mantra of 'Cultivate A Good Life & Record It', but I was pretty blown away. With Becky, what you see is what you get. One question I asked, as a scrapping entrepreneur myself, was how many hours a day does she work on the business. She spoke about when they first started the business, and the kids were smaller, that they would put them to bed, and she & David would be working until 3am. Every Night.  Now, she said, she has a bigger network and support team, but she still feels like she puts in hours & hours. Every Day.  As a scrapper, and as a woman, I completely admire Becky for both her business sense and also her work/life balance. It's something that I hope to work on and I definitely aim to be more like Becky.

I took along one of our Dizzy Izzy promotional milk cartons to give to Becky - she thought it was adorable! And because I gave her a little gift, I was given a gift in return - a signed Cut & Paste Mini Kit! So generous!  One lucky scrapper will win this treat at our May Retreat - will it be you??

Kit Highlight: Happy Girl

Today we are showing off this adorable kit, Happy Girl. The photo is one of me taken when I was 3, creating art at my little easel, and I couldn't be happier. I think I always was a bit creative!

I really loved these Crate Paper 'Neighbourhood' papers and the matching chipboard embellies. You get so many embellies there are plenty left over for other layouts and cards! Most of my layouts involve fussy cutting and some sewing as well, so you will find these techniques here, too!

There are only 3 kits left, you can find them here in the webstore.

Happy Scrapping!

New Year! New Kits!

Welcome to 2014!

A new year of scrapping, Retreats & Crafternoons!

Each week this year, we will be releasing new kits in our webstore, and posting a little something about them on the blog. This year our kits will have a new focus. Previously our kits have shown you one sample design, with enough left overs to do other projects (or incorporate into your scrapping stash).

In 2014 all of our kits will show you either 2 or 3 versatile sample layouts, or a sample and another project such as cards or a beyond the page item. Kits will still vary in price from $5-$30, but now with more page samples you should get more layouts done and more scrapping completed! It's win-win! And there will still be leftovers to add to your stash!

To start the year off, here is a page kit that features a quick layout and 2 quick cards. You can find this kit here in our online store.  I'm still really loving playing with layers, and transforming die cuts with ink. The cards came about because one of my New Years Resolutions was to be more thankful and to send more cards to show appreciation to the people in my life who I lean on. So I'm building up a card stash!

October Retreat, Part 1

October has been and gone and so has our fabulous October Retreat!

Fleur high-tailed it off to Vietnam within days of the retreat, and I've been madly trying to recover from the craziness of retreat preparations, and get all of our new stock onto our Webstore, so I didn't quite get to blogging about our wonderful weekend yet. (BTW, we have 115 new products in the store as I type, and there are more to come!)

It's 2 years since Fleur and I hosted our first Retreat, with about 20 scrappers (and us!) plus 3 tables of stock. I'm overwhelmed & giddy when I think about how we've grown - 43 scrappers joined us this Retreat (and 55 back in May!).  And we have SO. MUCH. STUFF. I think it took 8 cars to get everything to The Tops this time around. CRAZY.

A few shots of the shop set up

So much cardstock!

I was so excited by our shop set up this retreat!

Since we were so close. we had a Halloween theme, complete with a costume party on Saturday night. Such great costumes! It was fun scrapping with witches, devils, one angel, and even Maleficent! Loads and LOADS of group photos were snapped, and a few classic ones of the Dizzy Izzy team, where we couldn't quite work out where to look....

Robyn gets into character....

Check out our facebook page for more photos...

This retreat we had 6 challenges that scrappers could choose to enter. As always, the level of talent in the room was unbelievably high.  I'm so glad we have a peer voting system for the challenges, I would never be able to pick just one!

Congratulations to our winners - especially Sylvia, who joined us for the first time but made a big splash by winning 3 challenges!

Top row , l-r: BoBunny Challenge (Sylvia), 3x4 Journal Card (Karen) Sketch 1 (Sylvia)
Bottom row, l-r: Sketch 2 (Carolyn), The Colour Purple (Sylvia), Recipe Challenge (Michelle)

Stay tuned for more blog posts all about our classes and our awesome Treat Bags!

Happy Scrapping,

Scrapping On the Go

As soon as I saw the Amy Tangerine Travel Kit, I knew I would LOVE it.

I just needed to wait for the perfect opportunity to try it out. When my hubby dragged me along to a gaming convention called PAX in Melbourne with our friends, I knew my time had come!

Amy Tangerine Travel Kit Contents

  The Travel Kit comes complete with tools & fun things like rounded scissors, 2 types of adhesive (glue stick & runner), a self inking date stamp, needle & thread, label stickers, and a mini stapler! And it comes with a durable bag to store it in! Pretty much all you need to scrap on the go.

I knew we would be picking up lots of 'swag' (ie freebies), plus advertising, business cards, and who knows what else, so I decided to use a mini album to note down journalling, store any memorabilia we wanted to keep, and later be able to add a few photos to complete it.

My supplies - trying to be prepared for any crafty situation
I chose an Amy Tangerine Day Book from my stash, and decided to add some other supplies like alpha stickers, some stamps, a 6x6 paper pack, tags and of course some washi tape (which came in handy - see below) to add to my travel kit. Everything here except the day book fitted neatly into the bag, which took up hardly any room in the suitcase.

PAX was pretty crowded, but there was certainly lots of opportunities to collect swag and create memories. It was fun following Matt around, picking up fliers and freebies relating to the games we tried out. The stands that gave away flair badges were particularly popular, though I doubt others were grabbing them because 'flairs are so hot right now'.

On the last day of the convention, while Matt and our friends played some board games, I started to create my album. It was fun scrapping in an unusual environment. Very different to being at home or at a Crafternoon. I was glad I prepared by bringing some papers and extra items, and it pushed me to create differently, but I can recommend it especially if you are away on family holidays or travelling and want to get a little bit crafty.
Multitasking - Scrapping & playing Alhambra

I'm pretty sure I'm the only one scrapbooking!

Oh, and the washi tape? Came in handy when someone tried to steal our number plate and we needed a quick fix to keep it attached until we could get it repaired.

Is there nothing this awesome product can't handle?
Happy Scrapping!

May Retreat, Part 2

A certain webstore has had us a little distracted lately, so forgive us for the lateness of this post.

~~~~~
An extra 24 hours of scrapping meant an extra bunch of classes and scrap challenges. Altogether across the weekend there was 12 classes to choose from, and a total of 12 challenges to try your hand at.
This retreat our classes ranged from simply recreating a beautiful page, to a class making handmade layered embellies, to beyond the page wall art and bespoke gift album. We even had a card class!
Congratulations to all of our challenge winners and check out their winning submissions. The level of entries seems to increase dramatically each retreat, I'm sure it was hard to vote with so many outstanding pages being entered!
Thanks to all our our helpers and teachers - without you our weekend wouldn't run as smoothly as what it did. And thanks to our lovely scrapping community - we love hosting you all at our events. Our scrappers are what make our events so enjoyable, because we get to spend time with the most amazing and inspiring women. THANKYOU!
Our next Retreat is a 2 night stay in the lovely Acacia building at Stanwell Tops, October 25-27. Make sure to book your place early to avoid missing out!
There is one more post to come... about a certain layout that happened to go viral... stay tuned
