November Retreat - Getting Ready!

The boxes of new stock are starting to arrive, this can only mean one thing - Retreat Time!

In just 3 weeks time, it will be all systems GO, retreat madness. Our lucky scrappers will hopefully be all packed and prepared with photos printed and sorted, papers and embellies neatly organised. Oh, and hopefully some room for clothes and pyjamas in their cars!

Fleur and I, and our invaluable band of helpers, will likely be running around panicking about anything we may have forgotten, pricing the stock that always inevitably arrives the day before retreat.

We have some really fun challenges and games planned, including the return of the very popular Scrapbook Whispers Challenge that premièred last retreat. I can't wait to see what Ange will prepare for us this time. I especially can't wait to see what the results will be at the end of the weekend!

We've been putting together some very creative classes, some 'Quick & Easy' for those who like to churn & burn, others featuring learning new techniques for those who like to push their comfort zone.

My favourite part of Retreat is always handing our goodie bags out, or as I like to call them, Retreat Treats.  We have been busy packing and crafting some unique handmade gifts, I'm pretty sure that this Retreats 'treats' will top them all!

Here is a Retreat Sneak to get you curious!

Ooh, what could they be?

Reblog: A Beginners Guide to Scrapbook Retreats

Today I thought we might reshare this post from August 2012, where Michelle gives us her tips on packing for a retreat. If you are starting to panic about what to bring this weekend - don't! Remember to be prepared and that less can sometimes be more - there will be plenty of friendly scrappers who will loan you a punch or a stamp if you forget to pack or choose not to bring them.

See you at Retreat!
Tracey

  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today's Post is courtesy of guest blogger and beginner scrapbooker Michelle.
Thanks for giving us your unique insight into the world of Dizzy Izzy Retreats!
If you have been toying with the idea of joining us at a Retreat, make sure to read on. Hopefully we will be seeing you soon!
I recently had the privilege of attending the Scrapbooking Retreat at Stanwell Tops on Friday 25th– Sunday 27th May. This was my second retreat as I also attended Dizzy Izzy Scrapbooking’s first retreat in November 2011. I thought that seeing as though I have a little bit more experience with the retreats now, I can give an overview for all you beginners out there (like me!) or to those who keep thinking “I couldn’t do that!” I’m here to convince you that Dizzy Izzy Scrapbooking retreats really ARE the best way to learn the hobby!
My top 10 tips:
1.     Be prepared – make sure you pack your papers, embellishments, glues and cutting tools (i.e. scissors, paper trimmer) before the day. I made the mistake of thinking I had everything in one bag but I’d left half of my essentials at home. Fortunately at retreats, everyone is so friendly, someone always has a spare of whatever you’re after! (Thanks Tracey!)
2.     Pack smart – only pack photos, papers, embellishments, etc. that you think you will need for the weekend. Over the retreat, I completed 5 pages and a class. So I really didn’t need my heavy Martha Stewart scrapbooking box full of all the papers I’ve collected at craft fairs over the last year… I think now that my taste and themes are becoming more obvious, I know the papers that are going to work with the photos I have with me for the weekend.
3.     Try something new – Fleur, Tracey and guest demonstrators (this time, Kate, Jodie and Jen!) are a fountain of knowledge and really make an effort to introduce new ideas and techniques. I learnt to make a button embellishment out of a bottle cap, how to use washi tape, using dimensional magic (fun!) and making a decoration using a scallop punch and divine twine! These were demonstrations that literally took just 5 minutes out of my scrapping time and I learnt so much from them and applied them to some of my pages!
4.     Don’t be afraid to ask – don’t know if that ribbon will match that hideous jumper in a photo? Ask someone! Scrappers at retreats become your instant friends, especially those who share your general region of desk space. Often they’ll look at a page and say “Oooh I have a ribbon for that!” or “try this!” But they won’t know if you need help if you’re sitting there just glaring at your page…
5.     Have a sticky-beak – there are so many different styles of scrapbooking out there and at a retreat, the room is filled with inspiration – just look around you! On my way back from breaks, I’d sneak a peek at others’ works, taking notice of their layouts, colours, etc. You don’t have to copy everything, but it might just give you the bit of inspiration for a page you’ve wanted to try!
6.     Enter the challenges – the challenges give you a good focus for your pages. So it doesn’t matter how stuck you are, if you look at a challenge and commit to doing it, you’ve got half the problem sorted! I didn’t win anything this time, but people voted for my pages and I was really proud that I had a go!
7.     Stick it down! – a catch cry in retreats. Things often turn out better when you haven’t measured to the millimeter, or you can try to improvise if something doesn’t go “quite right”. Take a step back and look at your page every so often but don’t obsess over the measurement, angles or effects you’re going for. The trick is to work with the page as you do it.
8.     Participate in the games – the games are a good way to stand up, move around and take a break! It’s also a great way to get to know the scrappers around you!
9.     Visit the shop – there are so many goodies on sale in the shop! The shop is equipped with everything you could want – papers, embellishments, bling, stamps, paints, and of course, lovely assistants!
10.  Relax – it’s a retreat after all! Appreciate your surroundings and let your creativity flow! The best thing I did this time was to pack my trackies, not only because of the chillingly cold weather, but also because it helped me feel at home and comfortable.
I hope you find these tips helpful. The main thing is to enjoy yourself, have fun and learn lots! I hope to see you at the next retreat
October Retreat, Part 1
October has been and gone and so has our fabulous October Retreat!
Fleur high-tailed it off to Vietnam within days of the retreat, and I've been madly trying to recover from the craziness of retreat preparations, and get all of our new stock onto our Webstore, so I didn't quite get to blogging about our wonderful weekend yet. (BTW, we have 115 new products in the store as I type, and there are more to come!)
It's 2 years since Fleur and I hosted our first Retreat, with about 20 scrappers (and us!) plus 3 tables of stock. I'm overwhelmed & giddy when I think about how we've grown - 43 scrappers joined us this Retreat (and 55 back in May!).  And we have SO. MUCH. STUFF. I think it took 8 cars to get everything to The Tops this time around. CRAZY.
A few shots of the shop set up
So much cardstock!
I was so excited by our shop set up this retreat!
Since we were so close. we had a Halloween theme, complete with a costume party on Saturday night. Such great costumes! It was fun scrapping with witches, devils, one angel, and even Maleficent! Loads and LOADS of group photos were snapped, and a few classic ones of the Dizzy Izzy team, where we couldn't quite work out where to look....
Robyn gets into character....
Check out our facebook page for more photos...
This retreat we had 6 challenges that scrappers could choose to enter. As always, the level of talent in the room was unbelievably high.  I'm so glad we have a peer voting system for the challenges, I would never be able to pick just one!
Congratulations to our winners - especially Sylvia, who joined us for the first time but made a big splash by winning 3 challenges!
May Retreat, Part 2
A certain webstore has had us a little distracted lately, so forgive us for the lateness of this post.
~~~~~

An extra 24 hours of scrapping meant an extra bunch of classes and scrap challenges. Altogether across the weekend there was 12 classes to choose from, and a total of 12 challenges to try your hand at.

This retreat our classes ranged from simply recreating a beautiful page, to a class making handmade layered embellies, to beyond the page wall art and bespoke gift album. We even had a card class!

Congratulations to all of our challenge winners and check out their winning submissions. The level of entries seems to increase dramatically each retreat, I'm sure it was hard to vote with so many outstanding pages being entered!

Thanks to all our our helpers and teachers - without you our weekend wouldn't run as smoothly as what it did. And thanks to our lovely scrapping community - we love hosting you all at our events. Our scrappers are what make our events so enjoyable, because we get to spend time with the most amazing and inspiring women. THANKYOU!

Our next Retreat is a 2 night stay in the lovely Acacia building at Stanwell Tops, October 25-27. Make sure to book your place early to avoid missing out!

There is one more post to come... about a certain layout that happened to go viral... stay tuned

May Retreat, Part 1

Here is the first of a few posts about our May retreat.

The theme for our May Retreat was Beautiful Basics - a focus on using things stamps, templates, punches, cardstock in new ways.

This was our first ever 3 night Retreat and we started with 25 scrappers arriving on Thursday night. By 7pm Friday, a total of 56 lovely scrappers had joined us at Stanwell Tops for a weekend of relaxation and creativity.

Once the scraproom was full and the shop all set up, it was go, go, GO! for the rest of the weekend. Games, classes, massages, our Dizzy Izzy team were never still for long!

Thursday night scrappers had a few little treats just for them - goodie bags filled with lollies and embellies, perfect to get started, plus 2 exclusive challenge competitions.

Once everyone had arrived and settled in on Friday night, there were MORE goodies to hand out - calico bags filled with treats!

The weekend seemed to fly by, but we did manage to squeeze in a few surprises. And our scrappers even managed to surprise us!

Ange's page managed to 'Go Viral' and be scrap lifted across the room, inspiring it's own mini scrap competition and sparking an idea for a new challenge at the next Retreat!  Stay tuned for a blog post all about this to come!

Saturday night we managed to relax even more (if that was possible after those heavenly massages) and everyone dressed down for the pyjama party. The appearance of quite a few 'onesies' sparked a mini photo shoot with hilarious results.

Embellished PJ's just for the retreat!!!

Stay tuned for more Retreat Highlights!

It's A New Year!

Happy New Year!

The Dizzy Izzy Team had such a great 2012. I mean really, what an awesome year. So many lovely scrappers joined us at our Retreats and our new Crafternoons. How could it possibly get better?

2013 is going to be HUGE!

We have even more Crafternoons booked in for you to enjoy, including one in the Wollongong area for all our lovely scrappers from 'down south'. And our May Retreat is going to be epic - Thursday Night until Sunday afternoon! So many extra classes! Get into your scrapping groove earlier and still have time left to create!

We have more new Kits coming for our Kit-aholic scrappers. Watch out for new challenges and tips that we will be posting online to keep you (and us!) inspired.

Make sure to keep up to date with our news either via our blog here, our facebook page or our email newsletter (or all three!)

Oh, and a little birdie told me.... some big news is coming!

Goodie Box Fun!

Now its my turn to show you what I have been creating from the Retreat goodie box.

It was fun setting myself the challenge of highlighting what was in the box, and I was really pleased with what I was able to create and how much I was able to get out of it! With the addition of some cardstock, some mists and inks, and the use of tools like my sewing machine, stamps, cuttlebug and some templates, I was able to create 4 12x12 pages, a card and a mini album! AND I still have leftovers for more!

Check out my creations below, and be sure to leave me a comment with what you think! (Its a photo heavy post - sorry! But hopefully worth it!)

I used Amy Tangerine and Stamping Up stamps from my stash plus Die-Namics Dies in the cluster on the right.

I just love that rolled rose die!
Another page for my travel album - I covered some chipboard circles with washi tape for the flower centers. I'm really loving my sewing machine at the moment, you'll notice it on lots of my pages!

Another travel album page, this time from my first trip to the USA in 1995. Since I never scrap anything in order, I had never done anything with this photo, so I thought some paper strips and a chevron template might jazz it up. I've used those washi covered chipboard circles again!

This page turned out to be my favourite. I misted and dropped on the background with Heidi Swapp Primrose Color Shine, hand sewed the little heart and machine sewed the border. Done!

I did a quick card, ready to be pulled out of my card box and have a sentiment added when I need it, using one of the pre-cut dies we included in the goodie box and the same chevron template from the zoo page above - yes, I hand drew the chevrons and the the little pink dots!

Last but not least I have a little clear Kaiser mini album that's been sitting in my stash waiting for me to do something with it. Now I have a gift album thats just waiting for me to add photos and a few extra embellishments and its a perfect handmade gift for Christmas or a birthday and I am already halfway there!

Happy Scrapping!

Make N Take with Amy Tan

OMG!  Awesome!

I've been scrapping for what seems like a looong time, and of course in that time I've developed more than a few scrap idol crushes.

Amy Tan (of Amy Tangerine fame) is definitely one of them - I love her use of colour and her unique line drawings and designs. I also love the fact that her scrapping lines are neutral - ie, you can use them to scrap ANY occasion or any type of page. That totally speaks to me - I am an everyday scrapper. I don't have children so most of my pages are on my crazy everyday life. I very rarely scrap babies, or Christmas, or Easter, so scrap products that are 'general' are like gold to me!

Two Sundays ago, I headed on down to the local Spotlight store where Amy was doing a meet and greet, one of many stops on a promotional tour through Australia and New Zealand.

For some crazy reason, I was the only one there (see my post on my blog) hanging around like a crazy stalker. This meant more awesome Amy time for me and also led to my husband being taught how to use punches and other scrapping tools by Amy.

I got to chat to Amy about Dizzy Izzy and our retreats, and she was so lovely to talk to me about how she started scrapping and how the collaboration with American Crafts came about. She chatted about her work/life balance, and encouraged me to do more blogging - even just a photo with a few lines of text can just get you into the habit. She reads ALL of the comments on her blog and let me know how grateful she is to all of her supporters, so if you stop by her blog for some inspiration, be sure to leave a comment or two!

I was lucky to be given a signed American Crafts/Amy Tangerine apron (which made an appearance at our Crafternoon) and Amy also gave me a Make N Take Kit which we will be giving away to a lucky scrapper at our November Retreat.

The Make N Take Kit!
Dizzy Izzy will have the NEW Amy Tangerine line READY SET GO at the November Retreat. Full of bright fun colours and a gorgeous little elephant (we scrap our memories, and an elephant NEVER forgets - how cute!) I know you will love the line as much as I do!

Happy Scrapping!
